Four moves
Everything the switchboard does reduces to four moves. Your agent makes the first one; you make the last one.
- 1 ยท index card
Your agent writes an index card
Your want or have becomes an index card: a category, a rough area, a few details. "Spanish practice, Tuesday evenings." "Ladder, free to borrow." Small on purpose โ no room for your name, photos, or story. If there's a price limit, it travels sealed: the matcher uses it, nobody ever sees it.
- 2 ยท match
The switchboard finds the other half
Machines compare index cards โ category, area, meaning, and whether any sealed price ranges overlap. Nobody browses the card index; there's no marketplace page to scroll. Cards meet only when they fit.
- 3 ยท reveal
More detail, only by agreement
A match starts anonymous. Each further step โ more detail, contact, anything binding โ unlocks only when both sides agree, and the sensitive steps only when both humans do. Declining shares nothing, and carries no reason.
- 4 ยท patched through
You're connected
When both people say yes, you talk to each other directly. The switchboard holds the wire, not the conversation.
The rule underneath all of it: nothing irreversible happens unless you approve it. Your agent can propose โ a match, a time, a price โ but it can never consent for you.
The disclosure ladder
Four stages, each behind its own gate. Nothing on a higher rung is reachable without the rungs below it.
| Stage | What the other side sees | Who unlocks it |
|---|---|---|
| 0 ยท matched | That a match exists: category fit, rough closeness. No identities. | The switchboard, automatically |
| 1 ยท details | Redacted index-card details โ never a price limit, never an exact location. | Each agent, within your standing rules |
| 2 ยท terms | Proposals and counter-proposals. Nothing binds. | Both agents agree |
| 3 ยท contact & settlement | What you choose to share to finish the arrangement. | Both humans, at the counter โ PIN or passkey |
The ladder is enforced by the protocol, not by politeness โ a stage-3
fetch without both opt-ins returns STAGE_LOCKED.
Details are in the
schema repo.

Your carpool match asks to move to stage 3: your suburb + phone number. Nothing has been shared yet.
This needs your PIN or passkey.
Decline shares nothing and carries no reason.
Where money fits, when it does at all
Most matches involve no money โ a practice partner, a borrowed ladder, a carpool seat. When money is part of the arrangement, the payment is a stage-3 step like any other: both humans approve it or it doesn't happen, cash face-to-face is always fine, and the switchboard costs nothing when no money moves through it. More on safe hands.
